HyperImage

HyperImage applies the principle of the footnote, which is used for text, to images. This allows you precisely mark, describe and link any number of details within an image. Annotations can be integrated, linked to each other and made accessible through indices. Within HyperImage, the image details are not recorded automatically by a program, but manually by authors. The result of one’s own work can be published afterwards and thereby made available to a large number of users. This creates a collaborative environment for research and publication.

The use of HyperImage is aimed at reducing time-consuming work, since it is no longer necessary to locate image details in the conventional manner, which is by describing their location (in the front/back, to the left/right) or by indicating it with arrows or circles.

The “Ebstorfer Weltkarte” is a medieval world map with Jerusalem at its center. With its diameter of 3.57m it seems to be the largest and most comprehensive world map from the Middle Ages. Unfortunately, the original was destroyed in World War II. Besides different reproductions in the original size from the 1950s, today an interactive version of the map is available. This interactive version was created by the Leuphana University Lüneburg using HyperImage. A myriad of details within the map was tagged and equipped with additional information. All details are discernible without the need to describe their location verbally. In addition, translations of the Latin original texts are available in HyperImage. The interactive version of the “Ebstorfer Weltkarte” allows for its reproduction, preservation, and access to it even long after the original has been destroyed.

„RiR – Relationen im Raum“ (“Spacial Relations”) is a joint project, funded by the BMBF (German Federal Ministry of Education and Research), to analyze and visualize spacial relations between tombs at Jewish graveyards.

Prometheus is a digital archive for images used by arts and cultural scholars. It allows researchers to comfortably search through numerous image data bases using the same interface, paying only a small license fee. Prometheus uses a HyperImage port, which enables users to apply the different features of HyperImage to images from the Prometheus data base. This way, it is possible to, for example, generate collections of similar or related images, to visualize these collections or share them with others.

The current version of HyperImage allows the user to export information of different projects directly in their browser. It is no longer necessary to install a particular programm, but research results can be accessed using an internet browser. This browser export is possible for desktop computers as well as for mobile devices. The browser exports enables for example a direct and simple access to the results of the research projekt “Relationen im Raum” (“Spatial Relations”).

Since their cooperation for the “Relationen im Raum” project, DAASI International has been supporting the Leuphana University of Lüneburg in the continued development and improvement of HyperImage. If there are any issues with the software or if new features are required, DAASI International is the first point of contact for the Leuphana University of Lüneburg. Furthermore, DAASI International offers HyperImage as a Managed Service, hosted on servers of a German data center.

Eventually, DAASI International is also available as a partner for research projects, which are looking to use HyperImage as a virtual research environment or to develop it further.
