What Is eduMFA?
eduMFA is an authentication system for multi-factor authentication (MFA) that, among others, takes into account the requirements of universities. Using eduMFA means allowing for multiple ways of authentication, which in turn increases the security of sensitive data. eduMFA offers a particularly high level of data security while maintaining user-friendliness. eduMFA is a fork of the open source software privacyIDEA supported by German universities.
The software is designed and structured as a modular solution which enables multi-factor-authentication. It is highly customisable as well as expandable according to individual preference. Further, eduMFA is highly scalable, as well as multi-tenency and multi-instance capable, which means it is a perfect match no matter the size of the company.
For individual authentication flows eduMFA mostly uses OTP tokens (one-time password tokens). Generally, the software uses interfaces similar to REST interfaces in order to communicate with other programmes. This allows for an especially smooth integration into already existing IT environments.
For particularly specialised authentication flows, eduMFA supports a wide range of software and hardware tokens.
In particular, eduMFA contains an implementation of Passkey, which enables authentication without a password.
