Open letter to Claudia Plattner (BSI): Digital sovereignty for Germany and Europe is possible!
On 12 August 2025, BSI President Claudia Plattner told the German Press Agency (dpa) that digital sovereignty in Germany would not be achievable in the foreseeable future. The Open Source Business Alliance, together with 59 other supporters – including DAASI International – responded with an open letter in which they clearly contradicted this assessment.
The signatories of this letter emphasise that digital sovereignty is entirely achievable for Germany and Europe – the decisive factor is the will to pursue this goal with determination. To this end, it is necessary to invest specifically in the development of open software alternatives now and to consistently prioritise their expansion.
The 60 contributors include ten associations from the digital economy and civil society, 50 open source companies, universities, professors and other individuals. Dirk Schrödter, Schleswig-Holstein’s Minister for Digitalisation and Media Policy, is also supporting the initiative as a prominent politician.
