Red Hat Will Not Continue OpenLDAP Support for RHEL 8 – DAASI International Assists in New Migration Plans

American Linux developer Red Hat has recently announced in the release notes for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.4 (RHEL) that the next version, RHEL 8, will discontinue certain functionalities, including the support for OpenLDAP. Red Hat and DAASI International strongly advise on considering that desicion as soon as possible in migration plans, even if RHEL 8 has yet to be released.

Red Hat recommends upgrading to the Red Hat Directory Server (RHDS), which is a commercial version of the 389 Directory Server (formerly Fedora Directory Server) and can be acquired by a subscription. The 389 Directory Server, in turn, is based on the old Netscape Directory Server, whose code is considered as outdated and is not used anymore by many developers.

For customers who would like to continue operating OpenLDAP with RHEL 8, there are several support providers of current RPMs such as DAASI International, Symas and LTB, who either offer numerous support options to OpenLDAP (DAASI International and Symas) or can be implemented as an alternative and independent package (LTB).

DAASI International would be happy to assist you in any of these migration options. Should you have questions regarding RHEL and its OpenLDAP support, don’t hesitate to use our contact form.

It remains to be seen whether and how the discontinuation of the OpenLDAP support of RHEL 8 will affect CentOS. As soon as we know more, we will let you know via our news articles.
